Anne Bartuszevige, who just obtained her master degree at the Illinois State University, worked with us for a month. She was a participant of the Summer Institute Program jointly supported by the NSF (US National Science Foundation) and JISTEC (Japan International Science and Technology Exchange Center). She worked on rice seed predation by the tree sparrow (Passer montanus), a major pest bird in Japanese rice fields.
She gave the following two talks at our departement seminor on August 16, which attracted much interest by the department staff.
1) Organochlorine pesticide contamination in Illinois grassland
songbirds.
2) Rice seed predation by Tree Sparrows.
Anne left our lab on August 17 and now is a Ph.D. student of the Miami University, Ohio. We appreciate her good skills and efforts on the sparrow experiment and think she enjoyed her stay in Japan.
We have accepted another graduate student, Jim Armacost, who was from
the Lousiana State University and is now in the Illinois State University.
If you are interested in the program, please ask your university office
or NSF.
A new project on wildlife damage is being organized by the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute to be started in the next budget year. The project will focus mainly on the management of a few pest mammals. Our group intends to contribute to the project by a study of the brown-eared bulbul (Hypsipetes amaurotis), which damages fruits (especially oranges) and winter vegetables.
A new book, titled "The way to overcome damage by birds" has
been published. The authors, Masahiro Fujioka and Kazuo Nakamura,
are the current and the last chiefs of our group. Sorry, it is in
Japanese without English summary.
